Parks & Recreation

The Town's many parks and playgrounds are places for children to meet friends, families to spend time together outdoors or just a chance to sit under a shade tree.

Parks Definition: Parks are defined as designated parks and open space properties owned and maintained by the Town of Indian Head. Parks include all facilities and amenities within the specific property site boundaries to include but not limited to, athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, trails, open areas, pavilions, site equipment, fishing docks or boat launch areas, etc.

Park Hours: Parks are open from Sunrise to Sunset unless authorized as a condition of a Special Use Permit or approved by Town Hall. 

Neighborhood Parks

Meekins Park - Located at 206 Bland Drive across from Meekins Lane, behind the houses on Indian Head Ave., across from the end of Leslie Drive. Walk-up only, Tot lot play equipment and youth basketball hoop appropriate for 12 yrs and under.

Francis and Gladys Simmons Park - Located at 99 Thompson Lane. Dedicated in 2009 to Francis and Gladys Simmons. Playground, picnic area with tables and grills, baseball backstop and benches, and basketball hoops.

Public Parks

The Village Green Park and Pavilion - Located at 100 Walter Thomas Road, Indian Head Hwy and sits on 9.5 acres of open space. A covered out-door stage faces the South lawn area.  Perfect for festivals, large gatherings and outdoor concerts.

The Village Green Pavilion is a 85 x 89 foot multipurpose room and it is the center of many community activities and private gatherings.  Suitable for wedding receptions, dinner theaters, dinners, dances, anniversary/birthday celebrations, conferences, meetings and training sessions. Equipped with a full kitchen facility for use by private caterers, as well as  a full-sized stage – perfect for entertainment, live dance, musical and stage performances. Ample seating capacity of 265 for parties/celebrations and 400 theater-style for meetings/conferences. Set-up of tables and chairs is included in the rental usage fee.  Applicants are responsible for providing their own decorations, table coverings, tableware, kitchen/serving equipment and utensils. Handicap accessible restrooms and ample parking.

The Pavilion is not available for rent at this time. 

Mattingly Park: Located at 105 Mattingly Ave. This newly expanded park with pavilion, buffers the Mattawoman Creek from the residential development and provides a playground and areas for picnicking. While the pavilion is available for use by the public, private parties may reserve the pavilion for a $25 fee. The park is open during daylight hours and closes at dusk. Indoor bathroom facilities are available April 1st - October 31st during operational hours.  No alcohol permitted.

Slavin's Dock: Located at the end of Mattingly Ave on the Mattawoman Creek. Features a full length fishing pier, boat and kayak launch cove.
 

Charlie Wright Park:  Located at 101 Dr. Mitchell Lane, this athletic park boasts 2 soccer fields, 2 little league baseball fields, one regulation baseball field and a practice football field area. Indian Head Elementary School, which allows evening use of playground and basketball facilities, is adjacent.  Use of fields by permit only. For more information, please call 301-932-3470
